Scleral Contact Lenses

Scleral Lenses in Annapolis, MD

Stable vision. Real comfort. Built for eyes that “normal contacts” can’t handle.
Scleral lenses vault over the cornea and rest on the white of the eye, creating a fluid reservoir that can dramatically improve comfort and clarity for the right candidates.

If you’ve tried contacts and “failed,” this is usually why

Scleral lenses are often a fit when you have:

  • Keratoconus / ectasia / irregular corneas

  • Post-LASIK / post-RK irregularity

  • Corneal scarring or distorted vision

  • Severe dry eye or lens intolerance

  • Vision that shifts throughout the day (especially with soft lenses)

If your vision is technically “20/20” but functionally not usable, sclerals are worth evaluating.

What makes scleral lenses different

A scleral lens:

  • Rests on the sclera, not the cornea

  • Vaults over the cornea so it doesn’t rub the sensitive surface

  • Holds a tear-filled reservoir between the lens and your cornea

That design is why many patients report more stable vision and better comfort than standard contacts.

What we evaluate for

Your evaluation looks at what’s actually driving the problem:

  • Corneal shape/irregularity

  • Tear film stability and lid health

  • Prior contact lens history

  • Visual goals (driving, screens, work demands)

We’re not chasing “a lens.” We’re solving the reason your eyes aren’t functioning day-to-day.

The scleral fitting process (what to expect)

Scleral lenses are custom-made. Expect a process, not a one-and-done.

Are they hard to wear?

They’re different, but most patients adapt quickly with proper training.

  • You’ll use sterile preservative-free saline to fill the lens before insertion.

  • You’ll learn a repeatable routine (we teach it).

  • Comfort is often better because the cornea isn’t being touched.

Cost, insurance, and expectations

Scleral lenses are specialty medical devices and require professional fitting time.

  • Coverage varies by plan and diagnosis.

  • Some cases are considered medically necessary; others are elective.

  • We’ll review your benefits and expected costs during your evaluation.

Bottom line: if you’ve been stuck cycling through failed solutions, this is the “do it right” route.
